As part of his “Beyond Lost Laurel” series, Rich has written a piece about the shocking 1973 murder of Safeway manager Edie Miles, and how—thanks to the notorious Patuxent Institution—her convicted killer ended up only serving five years. Check it out here.
Could you write about Amy Morrison? I feel her story is so tragic, but she should never be forgotten.

Edie Miles was my mother and I was 5 Months pregnant with her first grandchild when she was killed. I had a girl and my dad tried so hard to take mom’s place. He even stayed all day at the hospital. I always thought that my daughter took mom’s place and made it a little easyer when our family was all together.

The pain Jesse Newlin West, Jr. caused me and my family on January 9, 1973 over a selfish act of greed will last a lifetime. Forty four years later the loss of my mother still breaks my heart and will remain a burning ember forever. She was robbed of her life at the age of 53. The few memories I hold will be cherished always.
